Hi there,
It is ridiculous to stand in the way of expansion and tourism for Sligo. To expect the runway extension not to happen and for the airport to close with numerous job losses is an outrageous thought, especially in this current economic crisis.
Dorrins Strand is a beautiful area yes, but a small platform is not going to affect that beauty.
I think it is safe to say that you all need to find another interest, one that would be time better spent, and just let Sligo keep its airport.
Regards.
Thank you for your comment John. However you should check your facts. There is no expansion planned. The Airport says they are making the runway longer to correct alleged safety issues.
In the 10 years 1998 to 2007 it cost the taxpayer €24.9 million in subsidies to finance Sligo Airport and the flight from Sligo to Dublin. That worked out – on average over the 10 year period – at a subsidy of €80.90 per person that ever flew into or out of Sligo Airport. [That's a fact]
And you would now support the spending of €10-12 million (perhaps more) of public monies to build a platform on Dorrins Strand??
Some people believe that there are better ways to spend €10-12 million of public finance.
But most of all we believe that building an airport runway on a public beach is not a sustainable development and therefore cannot be supported.
