    Hello,

I was just browsing the Irish Independent when I discovered the article about approval having been granted for the runway extension at Sligo Airport. You state on your website that Sligo Airport must have considered all alternatives. May I suggest that you check to see if they have considered an EMAS system, as described on the website link I have provided. It is a relatively recent development, specifically designed to reduce the required runway runout distance, and in the case of Sligo Airport, would most likely reduce construction costs (tax payer’s money). Failure on their part to have considered this option may enable you to win the appeal. The system has been approved and installed at Madrid Airport, so it’s only a matter of time before it spreads across Europe. Please let me know if you are interested in finding out more about this alternative, and I can put you in contact with a colleague in the USA who would be able to discuss EMAS in far more detail than I, and indeed suggest some of the more specific options to take into consideration at Sligo Airport.

[...] How disappointing that despite large number of submissions against the extension to the runaway that Sligo County Council have given their approval. This is despite Special Protection Area (SPA) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC) status of the surrounding Sligo Bay and Dorrin’s Strand. It is a truly appalling situation that national and European legislation continues to be ignored by the planners. The Fianna Fail ex-councillor and recently appointed Airport Board Chairman is quoted in the Irish Times today as denying that the new runaway would breach EU directives.
